A two-days forum on tourism took place on 13 and 14 October 2009 in Stara Zagora and Kazanlak.
A special guest was Mrs. Christine Fournier – executive of the World Association of Travel Agencies (WATA).
Mrs. Fournier announced that Bulgaria and Stara Zagora region will be recommended as an attractive tourist destinations on the 60th General Assembly of WATA in December in Barcelona.
According to surveys of travel agencies abroad, Bulgaria is not really popular as a destination and much efforts are needed to make it world-known. The Association’s executive believe that a national policy is required along these lines . MIEL-Travel – representative of Bulgaria in The World Association of Travel Agencies will make presentations and attend meetings during the Assembly to promote the country. The organization updates regularly its members with different proposals for visits in Bulgaria. Your country is worth being an excellent tourist’s destination and you can count on us to achieve it, said Mrs. Christine Fournier.
She announced that with her return in Switzerland, she’ll draft a report on her visit in Stara Zagora and on the project aiming promotion of the region.
The project was initiated by The Chamber of Commerce and Industry – Stara Zagora in cooperation with Stara Zagora Regional Economic Development Agency, the municipalities in the region and representatives of the tourism industry. It is implemented with the support of The World Association of Travel Agencies WATA, in close cooperation with MIEL-Travel - a representative of WATA in Bulgaria and under the patronage of the Governor of District Administration – Stara Zagora.
A part of the event was dedicated to a round table on “The Human Resources in the tourist sector ”. Conclusions stress on the lack of human resources with the right training and qualification. To solve the problem, we need to focus on the language education, the practicum, the education control and to establish a closer connection between business and education, said Mr. Oleg Stoilov - chairman of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry – Stara Zagora. He announced an idea for establishment of an Association for tourism development to join the forces of all stakeholders. The deputy-mayor Velizar Balabanov declared his support and assistance for the Association’s effective development. Darya Mavrodieva – manager of the Centre of Training Firms at The Ministry of education, youth and culture said during the round table that she’ll send invitations to 28 schools in Stara Zagora region with proposals for human resources training in the tourist sector.
A tour in the Historical Museum in Stara Zagora took place during the forum where the tourism potential of the region was presented. Christine Fournier granted the award plaques of the World Association of Travel Agencies to the District Governor – Mr. Yordan Nikolov and to the Mayor of Stara Zagora – Mr. Svetlin Tanchev during the cocktail on the antique street in the Historical Museum. The association’s certificates were bestowed on Mr. Oleg Stoilov – Chairman of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry – Stara Zagora, Mrs. Rumyana Grozeva – Executive of Stara Zagora Regional Economic Development Agency, Mrs. Darya Mavrodieva – Manager of the Centre of Training Firms at The Ministry of education, youth and culture and Srebrena Delcheva – manager of the hotels Forum and Uniqato.
The Minister of Culture – Mr. Vezhdi Rashidov, The deputy-minister of Economy, energy and tourism – Mr. Ivo Marinov and Mr. Plamen Minev – District Governor of Rotary – Bulgaria have sent their written congratulations to the organizers and participants in the forum. The tourism resources of Kazanlak have been presented on 14 October in the Tourist Information Centre as well as at an exposition of Kazanlak crafts. The participants have visited the archeological sites in the Historical Museum Iskra and in the valley of Thracian kings.
